A Season of Change

By Katina Connolly | September 16, 2020

It’s officially “back to school and back to work” season. I hope everyone is settling into their new routines whether that be homeschooling or washing masks for school every day. Crazy to think how much things have changed in the last few months and even crazier is wondering about what things will look like in the next few months or years even! Unfortunately, the theatre is still empty however we have been working away on a few things to make sure it is a safe space for you once we can re-open.

We had plexiglass installed at Box Office and have more partitions coming for our ticket takers and concession stands. We are currently testing our new contactless ticket scanning set-up which has also resulted in a few updates as it pertains to online ticket orders – always exciting news! We just finished painting the theatre floor so have a fresh, new space for you to enjoy when back. Traffic flow will be a little different with everyone entering through the Main Street doors and following the floor markings. Those are a few of the changes in store for you. The big change for us will be having great company and friendly faces fill the seats – we can’t wait!

The WKP Kennedy Gallery continues to welcome visitors by appointment only. The current exhibition, Our Bodies, Our Land, is only open till the end of the month so don’t delay! We are also accepting submissions for Hindsight 2020 – be sure to visit the gallery page to learn how you can be a part of the next exhibition!

While September is a bit slower than we were hoping for, we do have a few small things on the radar for the coming months. There will be a Status Update livestreamed on Facebook early October and then we are very excited to invite you to join us online for STREAMATHON 10·20·20 on October 20th from 6-9pm which is also taking place on our Facebook page. The goal of this virtual fundraiser is to help offset the revenue lost from our cancelled Golf Tournament and Hops & Vines gala. The event will feature some great local performances plus a few surprise celebrity appearances throughout.

We will be joining live entertainment venues across the country for Light Up Live on September 22 by illuminating the Capitol Centre in red. This event is intended to raise awareness for the “live event community”, an industry that is still dark including all the performers, creators, technicians, and other support personnel who all play a role in a $100 billion Canadian economic engine. We will be sharing details and pictures on our social media pages so be sure to follow along and show your support by spreading the word!

At this point, I’m officially handing things off to Dan Misturada who will be stepping in as Interim ED while I head off on maternity leave. Unfortunately, there was nothing I could do to prepare myself for the year we have encountered thus far and there’s not much direction I can give Dan for what lies ahead. However, I am sure he and the team here at the Capitol Centre will be monitoring things closely and keeping you all well informed! Until next year!
